This story begins well, with a bit of a puzzle as to Nathaniel's behaviour, although many listeners will know that his family has become rich from information before hand. While the story is pretty good, and does has some funny scenes and moments, my main criticism is that it isn't one thing or another.

Let me explain: Marshall Younger is an excellent writer of what are referred to as "Kid's slice of life" stories, and also humourous stories. This seems to be a bit too humourous to be a fairly straight tale of Nathaniel going up in the world, but not humourous enough as to befit a classic comedy of Adventures in Odyssey. Here we have the scene where Nathaniel treats everyone like muck because he's rich, which is really funny, but also the more serious, somewhat philosophical scene with Nathaniel and his father when they discuss whether being rich makes them happy. I feel it would be better if it lent itself more one way than another.
Trying to combine two styles sucessfully the same time is tricky. The writers of Adventures in Odyssey have pulled it off. One of my favourite Odyssey episodes, Unto Us a Child is Born combines the humour of the Christmas play with the romance between Eugene and Katrina. Here, it didn't come off. The story isn't a bad one, just a little disappointing.
