Description :
Calvin is looking for a book of tricks to play on his brother in the library at Whit's End. Whit
reads him the story of Horace and Grover McAlister, two twin brothers who race to be the first
to claim their father's land. Grover has some dirty tricks up his sleeve..
Review :
This is an interesting look at Odyssey's early past, and an entertaining story to boot. We also
have Calvin being told the story and learning from it - we see how to apply it, and aren't just
told.
The characters seem somewhat over the top in places, such as Grover leaving a note for Horace
reading "Har, Har! Tricked you again" or some such silliness. Given that this is supposed to be
true, it stretches credibility at times. It was fun though, as Grover tricked Horace again
and again only to lose out in the end.
One of the aspects of the story that struck me most was the wonderfully dramatic music. It added
enormously to an already good story. The characters were all very good, but the fact that
Ambrose Schnook's voice had played a different character only a few episodes ago was a little
distracting.
A fun episode, with music that was simply outstanding.
Rating :
Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
Notes :
This story tells how the town of Odyssey was first settled. It does seem to contradict the
Complete Guide to Adventures in Odyssey in that Horace is an outdoor farmer type in this
episode, whereas in the Guide he owned a drug store and knew some Latin words. It seems unlikely
that Horace would change his lifestyle like this, or that there would be two Horace McAlisters
in Odyssey.
