Odyssey was first settled by Horace McCalister, who organized drainage ditches to solve the problem of flooding from Trickle Lake ["The Ill Gotten Deed"].

Later on, when it came to naming the town, Horace McCalister said it was a town everybody "Ought to see", and the name Odyssey is a corruption of this [CG].

Soon After Whit's 5th birthday, his mother died. His father remarried to Fiona Donneral ["Thank you, God", CG].

The Whittaker family moved to North Carolina, the Durham area, where he attended Robert E. Lee Elementary School [CG].

1934

James Curtis supposedly visited Marus ["Glenall's Betrayal"].

Shortly before Whit's 11th birthday Fiona was blinded in a riding accident, and led Whit to Christ ["Thank you, God"].

The Mayor's House was converted to the Fillmore Recreation Centre as part of the Depression relief effort [CG].

1935

Whit and Jack Allen went on holiday to Bath, North Carolina and found some old coins, which helped pay for their college education ["Blackbeard's Treasure"]. Whit started attending Durham High School [CG].
