1800s to 1930s
Early 1800s
Odyssey was first settled by Horace McCalister, who organized drainage
ditches to solve the problem of flooding from Trickle Lake ["The Ill Gotten
Deed"].
Later on, when it came to naming the town, Horace McCalister said it
was a town everybody "Ought to see", and the name Odyssey is a corruption
of this [CG].
1850
Henry Ross and family escaped to Canada along the Underground Railroad.
While they were in Odyssey, they were sheltered by Reverend Andrew Jamison.
Slave hunters searching for them unintentionally burnt down the Rectory
in Odyssey, and the church was also damaged.
Late 1850s
Rufus Cowley went in search of the Treasure of Le Monde, but was killed
in a shoot out in the tower of the church ["The Treasure of Le Monde"].
Sometime between then and 1911 the church in Odyssey was converted
to a house, which belonged to the mayor.
1911
A telephone directory was installed in the Mayor’s house in Odyssey by
Almon McCalister ["The Curse"].
1915
Madina Nicholaivitch born in Russia ["Annison's Risk"].
1917
The Nicholaivitch family moved to America to escape the Russian Revolution
["Annison's Risk"].
1921
In Odyssey, John P Garrison received a fatal gunshot wound at noon on Main
Street. The shot was fired by Thomas Newcastle, but it remained a mystery
for many years ["Buried Sin"].
1923
1st October
John Avery Whittaker born in Aberdeen, Scotland, while his American father,
Harold Whittaker was teaching in Scotland at the time [CG].
1927
Maddy Nicholaivitch supposedly visited Marus ["Annison's Risk"].
1928
Soon After Whit's 5th birthday, his mother died. His father remarried to
Fiona Donneral ["Thank you, God", CG].
The Whittaker family moved to North Carolina, the Durham area, where
he attended Robert E. Lee Elementary School [CG].
1934
James Curtis supposedly visited Marus ["Glenall's Betrayal"].
Shortly before Whit's 11th birthday Fiona was blinded in a riding accident,
and led Whit to Christ ["Thank you, God"].
The Mayor's House was converted to the Fillmore Recreation Centre as
part of the Depression relief effort [CG].
1935
Whit and Jack Allen went on holiday to Bath, North Carolina and found some
old coins, which helped pay for their college education ["Blackbeard's
Treasure"]. Whit started attending Durham High School [CG].
1939
Whit enrolled at Duke University, and studied Philosophy and Literature
[CG].
