Adventures in Odyssey
Where is Odyssey?
by Audrey Viera
Where is Odyssey? Unfortunately, neither Odyssey nor Whit's End really exist. But where would it
be if it existed? Audrey Vieira did this research on the subject. Interestingly, some of the
Family Portraits episodes, which were the direct forerunner of Adventures in
Odyssey, refer to Odyssey as being in Ohio in the intorduction. However, they do contradict
some Adventures in Odyssey episodes on a few matters, so whether this is "canon" is
debatable. Phil Lollar stated that he based Odyssey on Kalmath Falls.
Here are some clues that have brought me to the conclusion that Odyssey is in Ohio.
Zachary Sellers moved to Odyssey from Richland (since he didn't specify a state I'm assuming Richland is in the same state as Odyssey) and in Ohio there is a city called Richwood.
Freddy Moved to Odyssey from (and his parents were considering moving back to) Columbus. (i.e. Columbus, Ohio).
Johnny Appleseed traveled through Ohio.
Part of the Underground Railroad went through Ohio.
There is a city in Ohio called Edgerton (Edgebiter Company).
Everyone is always talking about Connelsville, there is a city in Ohio called Mc Connelsville.
There are mountians along the Ohio/Pennsylvania border.
There is a city right in the middle of Mc Connlesville, Ohio and the state line called Beverly. It is about a one day train ride to Chicago from Beverly, Ohio. It would take a train (depending on speed and number of stops) 17 hours 58 minutes to get from Beverly Ohio to Chicago....which is long enough to be considered as one day...which would fit into the descripion of the length of the train ride in "Train Ride".
It is approximately 2,425 miles from Beverly, Ohio to Southren California. Which would pretty much fit into Connie's line to Pam in "Pamela Has a Problem" "I had to come two-thousand miles to get you to introduce me to Jesus".
Also (though I'm not totally sure about this...my geography is a lot better than my history) I heard that somewhere in that region (around Beverly, Ohio) in the spring of 1833 there was a fire in a pastor's house which is assumed to have been set by slave hunters. That could be pure coincidence. I'm sure a lot of houses were burned by slave hunters.
It is my belief that the town of Odyssey is situated very close to the "real town" of Beverly, Ohio.
