Review :
Those who condemn Harry Potter for the magic in it won't like this book - in many ways it is
worse in that respect than the slightly tongue-in-cheek Harry Potter approach. I won't get
emproiled in that debate here, but I feel that it is a somewhat negative aspect. Unlike Harry
Potter, however, they do have to face the consequences of their actions more.
The story has some interesting ideas, especially "Fred", the white hole Nita and Kit accidently
conjoured up. There are some good descriptions too. The first part of the book is probably the
most interesting, as Nita gradually discovers more.
I didn't like the part in the alternate universe. It seemed to verge on the cliched, what with a
polluted, abandoned city and nasties chasing after them. It seems to be a little like something
you might get in a bad cartoon on Saturday morning when people travel into the future. I didn't
really enjoy that section of the book as much. The best part of it in my opinion was the dragon
in the underground.
It's not a special story, and I do feel that Nita and Kit becoming wizards could possibly
influence children to get involved with magic. Considering how dangerous that is, I don't think
that it should be read unless the reader is old enough to be discerning, or reads it with a
parent, for example, who can help them learn to discern. I've said it before, discernment in
reading is very important.
